Riding safely in Spain
Please ride carefully and wear a bicycle helmet. At handover, we explain how your bike works and offer advice for your route.
- Helmets are legally required outside built-up areas, and also within them for children under 16. We recommend a helmet on every ride.
- Observe closures and signs in protected areas. Not every path is open to bicycles.
- At night and in tunnels, switch on your lights. Outside built-up areas, reflective clothing is also required when lights are mandatory.
- Use signposted cycle lanes and suitable right-hand shoulders in accordance with local rules.
- Do not hold a phone or wear headphones while riding.
- Ride without alcohol and adapt your speed to the route, visibility and traffic. Observe the applicable speed limits.
- Riding side by side is permitted only when traffic and visibility conditions allow it. Do not obstruct other road users.
Guidance based on the previous website and the Spanish traffic authority DGT. Separate rules apply to e-scooters and other vehicle types. Please note the changes from October 2026 and current local signs.
